It's getting colder which means the impact the weather is having on your skin is getting harsher! Humidity levels are at a low during these months and it doesn't help that we do everything we can to stay warm like sitting directly in front of the fire place (me >.<) or spending an extra 10 minutes in the shower (also me >.<).
I am sharing with you three ways to help your skin retain it's moisture and keep it's glow even in winter.
❄️ Your skin has a barrier that minimises TEWL (water loss in the skin) and maintains the skins natural moisture. It is made of epidermal lipids, ceremides, fatty acids and cholesterol. It's job is to protects the skin from extrinsic factors such as photo ageing (Sun exposed skin damage), infection and irritants and pollution. It is important that you maintain your skins barrier as it is heavily compromised during winter as it is being stripped by the harsh conditions. For protection try using products that include ceremides as they help to hold the skin cells together reducing moisture loss. Vitamin B5, C and E work to prevent any damage caused by the environment which is also a defence the barrier. Always, ALWAYS wear Sun Protection with a minimum Factor of 30! This will protect you from the UV rays of the sun that can cause burns, skin damage and premature ageing. Even in the winter those rays are still penetrating your skin!
❄️ It's not just about maintaining a skincare routine but how you apply the products is extremely important. The best way to maximise product absorption is to apply them immediately after washing your face. Damp skin (not wet) is permeable skin meaning liquids or your products can pass through. This allows better absorption for toners, serums and creams which then allows them to penetrate the skin deeper. By using a hydrating (non-alcohol) toner with active ingredients this will allow better penetration of the rest of your products.
❄️ Invest in a serum as it delivers potent ingredients catering directly to your skins needs. A good serum to use during winter is on that contains Hyaluronic Acid. Your skin naturally produces hyaluronic acid but it often seaps out of the skins barrier through TEWL. By using a serum you targeting your specific skin concern. Serums have a high concentration of active ingredients so by applying one that contains hyaluronic acid you are treating the lack of hydration in the skin as well as promoting healing and targeting premature ageing.
A very important step to managing your skin this winter is by booking in for regular facials. We recommend our Deluxe Dermaplaning Facial as it offers a deep cleanse and exfoliation, high frequency for it's anti-bacterial properties, a jelly mask to protect the skin from the Winter Free Radicals, maximum hydration and skin barrier protection. It provides everything your skin needs to keep that summer healthy summer glow even in winter.
