Skincare edit.: Oily Skin

Oily skin is one of those things that can be a struggle to balance. What's important to remember is that the natural oil in your skin is regulated by a process called Homeostasis where your body adjusts to ensure your internal environment is maintained using hormones and the nervous system. This process is linked to your sebaceous glands which is responsible for your body's natural oil.

The sebum production can go into overdrive trying to keep up with the extremes in temperature and changes resulting in an increase in sebum.

Other factors such as poor diet, stress, improper skincare and lifestyle can contribute to oily skin, so I'm guessing you're just wanting to know what products will help?

Here are some recommendations:

Cosrx Salicylic Acid Gentle Cleanser

As you may already know, Salicylic Acid is a must have when regulating oily skin. It is lipophilic which means it will work by breaking through the oils within the skin. Salicylic Acid is also a chemical exfoliant that will unclog pores by removing trapped dirt and oils as well as shaking off dead skin. Lastly, it has anti-inflammatory properties which will reduce the appearance of comedones.

Due to the current weather conditions, a gentle cleanser is recommended for the skin as it is currently battling with external factors. You could also make your skin even oilier by using too many harsh products. This gentle cleanser will remove impurities, dirt and oils while gently nourishing the skin so it doesn't feel stripped and the natural barrier will still be in tact.

THE INKEY LIST Niacinamide

When we refer to things as 'non-comedogenic' we mean something that is formulated to not clog the pores. Niacinamide is an all-round ingredient with clinical evidence to back just how effective it can be in your routine! It has the ability to regulate the skins natural sebum production, decongest and reduce pore size and provide the skins natural barrier with protection, preventing unwanted bacteria from getting in.

This serum in particular not only contains Niacinamide, but Hyaluronic Acid to provide the skin with the hydration it needs to keep the skin regulated and functioning properly.

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

This is a top-rated product that so many including ourselves would recommend having a part of your oily/blemishy skin management! BHA standing for Beta Hydroxy-Acid is oil soluble so will break down the oils and exfoliate the skin. This is super effective at reducing blackheads and blemishes with it's anti-inflammatory properties.

It contains metaphylpropanediol for better product absorption of active ingredients and tea tree to not only soothe but to act as the needed antioxidant.

We would strongly advice that you gradually introduce this product into your routine, and suggest use about 3 times a week, especially if your skin is sensitive.

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA

Due to environmental factors and lack of moisture in the air as a result of increased heating in homes, your skin may become dehydrated or compromised which is why it's important to have skin-barrier-building ingredients within your routine.

This moisturiser offers a cocktail of ingredients such as amino acids, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin and tryglycerides which teamed together will help build, strengthen and maintain the skins natural barrier. A natural barrier means oil-regulated, blemish-free skin.

Activated charcoal is an ideal match mask for oily/acne skin as it as it works by absorbing toxins, impurities, excess oil and dirt from the skin reducing the chances of breakouts occurring. This Face Mask also contains fruit extracts that protects the skin by acting as an antioxidant, regulates the production of sebum and promotes healthy skin cell renewal which keeps the skin clear. The formulation includes a number of tyrosinase inhibitors that will target the pigmentation that is sometimes left behind as a result of acne.
